The Perfect Couple Creator & Netflix Reveal Plans for More Nantucket Adaptations

Netflix is going all in on their adaptations of Elin Hildebrand novels, following the tremendous success of The Perfect Couple. Starring Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Dakota Fanning, Meghann Fahy, Billy Howle, and Jack Reynor, the six-episode Limited series is based on Hildebrand’s novel of the same name, exploring a mysterious murder at a wealthy estate in Nantucket. The Perfect Couple is part of Hildebrand’s wider Nantucket series, a set of loosely connected stories, all set on the island.

Confirmed by Deadline, Elin Hildebrand and showrunner Jenna Lamia are already hard at work adapting another of the author’s novels in the series. The pair did not reveal which of the three other books the new project will adapt, or if it will be in the same limited series format as The Perfect Couple. It may surprise fans of the show that The Perfect Couple is actually the third book in the Nantucket series, and was published less than a decade ago, in 2018. The first book in the series, A Summer Affair, was first published in 2008, and the final novel, Swan Song, was released this year. Lamia confirmed that the new project will adapt another of Hildebrand’s books, and will not be a direct sequel to The Perfect Couple as that show “was always meant to be a limited series.”

Jenna Lamia also confirmed that she is working on another project with The Perfect Couple lead, Nicole Kidman. Lamia didn’t reveal any details about the project, only that it is separate from her work on the Nantucket series.

The Perfect Couple has been a huge hit for Netflix. The show raced to the top of the streamer’s weekly viewership leaderboard upon its release, and still remains in the Top 10. In its first week on Netflix, the series garnered a ridiculous 3.4 billion minutes watched. In comparison, Prime Video’s IP-driven The Rings of Power only received 372.2 million minutes watched in the same week (via Variety). In its second week on Netflix, The Perfect Couple was nudged out of the top spot by Ryan Murphy’s controversial Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. The Perfect Couple even defended its Top 2 position from Netflix’s smash teen-hit, Emily in Paris, which has now debuted the second half of its fourth season.

So far, The Perfect Couple has earned over 52 million views. To break into Netflix’s all-time Top 10 most popular shows, The Perfect Couple will have to try and double its viewership. Season 2 of Bridgerton currently sits in 10th with around 93 million views. However, those views were accumulated over a 91-day period following its release. Therefore, the tall task presented to The Perfect Couple might not be as impossible as it seems. The murder-mystery series is currently in its third week on Netflix, and viewing figures suggest that audiences are still discovering the show.
