'So Much Weight on Your Shoulders'

Legacy sequel Twisters has finally hit theaters, and while it isn’t directly tied to the original film, Brandon Perea, who plays Boone in the film, has stated that he was terrified of following in the footsteps of Philip Seymour Hoffman, whose character, Dustin, shares many similarities with his own. Since the original film’s release, both Bill Paxton and Hoffman have sadly passed away. Even though their roles are non-recurring due to the film’s standalone nature, Twisters does manage to retain some of the likable aspects of the original, especially Perea’s character Boone, who is remarkably similar to Hoffman’s Dustin “Dusty” Davies.

Brandon Perea spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that he did not initially know which character he would be playing in the blockbuster. He even said to his partner that whoever is picked to play Boone, the “Philip Seymour Hoffman type,” would have a lot of “weight” on their shoulders. Little did he know it would be him…

“I just got the script to see if I was into it. And then we had the roles mixed up. My agency was like, “Read for this role,” and I was like, “OK, great.” So I read it for that role, and then I kept looking at the Boone part on the page. And I was like, Oh, this is kind of like the Philip Seymour Hoffman role. And, in the middle of reading the script, I told my partner, Oh man, there’s this funny guy, Boone. He is kind of the Philip Seymour Hoffman type. Shout out to the poor bastard who plays him because that’s going to be so much weight on your shoulders.”

Even though the actor felt the pressure when filling Hoffman’s shoes in Twisters, he was grateful for the opportunity. Ultimately, Perea’s Boone is one of the film’s most standout characters, and it certainly sounds like he enjoyed playing the role.

“And I ultimately ended up being that poor bastard. I just wanted to bring a pinky-nail amount of fun that he brought to it, and I hope I did.”

Twisters Has Made Its Mark on the Box Office

Twisters, directed by Lee Isaac Chung, is a standalone sequel to Twister (1996), but it also serves as a revival of the original film, albeit with a slightly modified storyline. Surprisingly, Twisters has now outperformed most modern reboots, establishing itself as a summer blockbuster that fans of both the original and newcomers want to see. In particular, Glenn Powell’s performance as Tyler has received substantial praise and aided in the film’s critical and commercial success, with an opening week gross of $81 million. Twisters gives him a demanding role, which he easily fulfills thanks to his charismatic presence and natural ‘leading man’ qualities.

Of course, the success of Twisters is not just thanks to the film’s cast, but also to the crew who worked on it. Especially director Lee Isaac Chang, who takes a stab at a big-budget blockbyster for the first time despite having little experience with such projects. Furthermore, the involvement of others, such as Joseph Kosinki (story credit), Dan Mindel (cinematography), and Benjamin Walfisch (music), has no doubt contributed greatly to Twisters‘ success.
