Deadpool & Wolverine's Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman Tease Avengers Secret Wars and MCU Futures

Summary

  • Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman may make future appearances in the MCU, despite focus on their last outing.
  • The newDeadpool & Wolverine
movie brings X-Men characters to the MCU under Disney’s control.
  • A 35-minute preview of the movie screened at a fan event in China, described as being fresh and fierce.

Many believe that Deadpool & Wolverine will see Hugh Jackman play Wolverine for the last time, while Ryan Reynolds is fully expected to appear in at least one more Deadpool movie. However, neither star is ruling out future appearances in the MCU just yet. The new movie, directed by Shawn Levy, brings the titular heroes into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is the franchise’s first film to focus on X-Men characters since Disney bought back the rights from Fox. A lot of the marketing has revolved around Jackman reprising the role, after his iconic character was killed off in James Mangold’s Logan, but Deadpool & Wolverine might not be his last outing as the character.

Speaking to Variety, the internet’s new best-friends, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and Shawn Levy sat down to discuss the upcoming movie. The interview was filled with jokes, sarcasm, and wit – everything you’d expect from a Deadpool press tour. But one question left the trio uncharacteristically silent. After the film’s first trailer featured an Easter egg nodding at Avengers: Secret Wars (the next slated Avengers movie), the trio were asked if they would be involved with the film. Reynolds, figuring out what he was allowed to say, simply answered:

I don’t know. Yeah, we’ll see. Yeah.

Hugh Jackman then joked about his co-star’s short answer, saying:

Clearly, this is our first major interview of this press tour. I’m not sure how to answer.

Shawn Levy also weighed in on Avengers: Secret Wars. While Reynolds and Jackman’s involvement in the film is born purely from fans’ hopes, Levy has been rumored to be directing the new Avengers movie for some months now. Not giving anything away, Levy teased that the trio will get better at avoiding that question as the press tour goes on. The director joked:

“We’re going to get a far more packed and evasive answer for all future interviews.”

35 Minutes of Deadpool & Wolverine Have Already Screened for Some Fans

Before you go scrambling across the internet trying to find the pre-released footage, the 35-minute clip of Deadpool & Wolverine was screened exclusively at a fan event in Shanghai, China. Some reactions have been released online, and the footage has been described as “fresh and fierce”.

During the interview, Ryan Reynolds mentioned the reactions of the fans during the event. Reynolds revealed that (obviously) the footage won’t be revealed to the wider public before the film is released, but the actor holds the clip in very high regard. Reynolds said:

“There’s so many surprises in the movie we don’t want the world to start talking about it before people actually get a chance to see it. But those 35 minutes, they cook. They’re pretty damn incredible.”

Deadpool & Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds does not think anyone but Hugh Jackman can play Wolverine. Do you agree?

Deadpool and Wolverine aren’t the only Fox characters joining the MCU in their self-titled film. The pair will be joined by the ‘budget’ X-Men shown in the previous Deadpool movies, including Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Colossus. Josh Brolin has denied rumors that he will be reprising his role as Cable in Deadpool & Wolverine, but no one will really know the truth until the film releases later this month.

Deadpool & Wolverine
is released in theaters on July 26, 2024.
